Encountered a Bear just down stream from the camp where the narrows open up. We actually chased one out on the trip upstream in the Narrows, 107 degrees and wet bear tracks on the rocks. We also found a dug out "Cave" in the stream bed where said bear departed from after hearing out approach. After getting out of the "Narrows", I decided we should get out of the creek that was now bordered on both sides by tall grass and seemed like a perfect spot for a bear to come charging out ? Got out of creek on west side and there was the little camp you write of. At that time(2003) there were logs for setting and a old camp stove. ( And a sign in register for the other attraction. Back then, we could ride our motorcycles to Bluff camp. It was an easy walk down to Poplar camp, then it was brush busting the last mile, or so. The great fishing was worth it. Back then the camp had a nice ice can stove and well stocked with pots and pans. We always kept a food cache down there but never quite got it bear proof.
Good times...
H.H.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7725929327956365942.post-4467242121125557692013-04-30T23:25:11.522-07:002013-04-30T23:25:11.522-07:00Sad to hear about the trout/steelhead. Haven't been up IC since pre-Zaca Fire and never actually made it all the way to the Narrows.

I recall IC having more poison oak than just about any other LPNF trail south of Big Sur. We saw lots of critters along the creek too: snakes, frogs, turtles, etc.

Might be interesting some time to attempt a SY River loop from Upper Oso to IC via Camuesa, then follow IC all the way up to Bluff and then from Bluff head over into the Santa Cruz Creek drainage and then back out to Upper Oso. Nice long walk along two of the nicest creeks in the SY River watershed.

-NicoAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
