Topatopa Peak Fire Lookout: then (1998) and now

Topatopa Fire Lookout May 1998

The lookout tower as it is today, thank you Day Fire.

Sometimes great things fall out of the sky. A gentleman who wishes to remain anonymous emailed these photos of the shuttered and abandoned fire tower on Topatopa Peak. These photos are of historic value simply because things have been different up there ever since the Day Fire of 2006. All that remains of the place these days is a loosely held together steel frame. So, a big tip of the hat to the cool dude who chose to share these pictures of the way things used to be. Enjoy.

  2. Dude, it's Topatopa Peak (as titled). You're thinking about Topa Bluffs, which does not have a tower. Click on Topatopa Peak on the side-bar for TR.

  5. yeah if this is the tower east of hwy 33, west of the topa topa's and south Rose Valley camp grounds i would call it Nordhoff ridge also. The day fire didnt make that far I believe that tower was burnt in the 84-85 fire. none the less looks like you had a great hike and some cool pictures!!

  6. Okay guys, once again, get a damn map and look at the eastern end of the ridge from Hines Peak. There you will find Topatopa Peak. For additional views I encourage you to look at both posts, Nordoff and Topatopa Peak (SVS). In the side column to the right you can click on trip reports to BOTH summits and you'll see that the world is bigger than you thought. -DS
